South Lodge Hotel
Built in 1883, South Lodge exudes the feel of a family home. Amongst the 93 acres of parkland are 260 varieties of Rhododendrons, Camellias and Azaleas which, when in bloom, present a magnificent sea of colour.
The Camellia Restaurant has been awarded 3 AA Rosettes, specialising in traditional English cuisine with Mediterranean influences. The fine dining restaurant has stunning views over the undulating hills of the South Downs. The restaurant has a new terrace where diners can eat al fresco.
Alternatively, saunter down to the unique, marble-topped open-air Champagne Pavilion for a glass of bubbly as the perfect aperitif with a view. Open to hotel guests and non-residents.
The South Lodge’s lounge is traditional and informal with snug areas, large sink-in sofas with plumped up cushions, crackling open fire and a baby grand piano. It’s the most welcoming place to natter with friends over a frothy cappuccino, enjoy a gorgeous afternoon tea or relax, share a bottle of wine, or just read a book.
The original library has a cosy bar offering warmth, comfort and tradition, and the walls are lined with books from around the world. The perfect place for a pre or post-dinner drink, bed-time night cap or simply to catch-up with friends, this gorgeous hideaway bar offers everything you’d expect of a first class hotel as well as a selection of rare ports dating back to 1963 and a display of over 30 whiskies.
There are 41 exquisitely furnished luxurious rooms, some with romantic four posters, others with bubbling Jacuzzis, and wherever you turn, stunning views over the South Downs. Alternatively, The Bothy Cottage, within the grounds of the Hotel and set in its own garden, has five bedrooms, a downstairs traditional lounge, dining room and pine kitchen, and all the amenities and comforts you would expect from a world-class hotel.
The hotel nestles on a secluded warm level terrace on a gentle south slope with fine views to the south and south-west across the Weald. The 93 acres of woodland, formal lawns, ponds and gardens are particularly impressive and effective in spring. On the front lawn, you will find a Rhododendron Arboretum. This is the largest single Rhododendron in England, is over 150 years old and standing at 25 feet tall, it produces a mass of cerise flowers in late April and early May.
A short stroll across the beautifully manicured, tiered lawns brings you to a beautiful lake with a pretty babbling brook running into the lake and winding pathways. And lastly, tucked away behind the impressive Rhododendron on the front lawn, is a Victorian rockery.
Order a luxury picnic hamper from the kitchen, borrow a rug from reception and saunter down to the beautiful lake.
With 93 acres there is plenty of space to take advantage of our outdoor activities! Challenge friends to a game of tennis or croquet or simply explore these stunning grounds.
