The 18th century Pavilion is a magnificent, eccentric structure of Indian-style appearance, yet with a Chinese-style interior decoration.  The Pavillion was the seaside residence of King George IV.
Arundel Ghost Experience, Arundel, 01903 889821

Originally built in 1569, but extensively altered in the 18th century, Glynde Place is a grand Elizabethan mansion in the heart of the Sussex Downs.  The house offers an insight into life within a traditional English manor house, with portraits, furniture, silver, embroidery and books on view.  The gardens that surround the house are lovingly cared for.

Home to the Gage family for over 500 years, Firle Place was originally Tudor but was remodeled in the 18th century.  Home to four collections of paintings, furniture and porcelain from Europe, and some pieces from America.
Michelham Priory, Upper Dicker, Sussex, 01323 844224

Michelham Priory dates back 800 years and has the longest medieval, water-filled, moat in England.  Tapestries, furniture, kitchen utensils and an 18th century children's bedroom are all on display, as well as a working watermill and pretty gardens.

Fishbourne Roman Palace, Fishbourne, 01243 785859

A Roman military base that went on to become a luxurious palace by the end of the first century.  This site was discovered by accident in 1960.  Plans, reconstruction drawings and models are on display and the remains of the mosaics can be found within the North Wing of the Palace.

Beautiful Elizabethan house that remains a family home, surrounded by a 300 acre ancient deer park.  The house has furniture, paintings and an early needlework collection on display.  The grounds have walled gardens, a maze, lake and a Wendy House.

Cowdray Heritage Trust, Cowdray, 01730 810781

Cowdray was originally built in the 1500s but almost completely burnt down in 1793.  Only the Kitchen Tower remained but this went to rot over the next 100 years.  Some renovation took place in the early 1900's but it was not until recently that a major renovation took place and the ruins and Kitchen Tower of Cowdray was re-opened in 2007. Visitors to the Heritage Trust are given an interesting audio tour.
Newhaven Fort, Halland, Sussex, 01273 517622

Exhibition, sounds, smells, displays and audio-visual presentations give the visitor a taste of what the fortress was like during Victorian times, and how they were used during the First and Second World Wars.  The large, echoing, underground tunnels were built into the cliffs and are complete with gun emplacements and ramparts.

The 16th century timber framed house was once the home of Anne of Cleeves, who was awarded the property as part of her divorce settlement from Henry VIII.  Some of the rooms are furnished as they would have been in earlier times, but the property now houses other items such as Sussex Pottery.

Manor house that gives an insight into the upstairs, and downstairs lives of the early 20th century.  Twenty rooms over four floors, with servant’s quarters, kitchens, owners living areas and the nursery on the top floor.

Goodwood House & Estate, Goodwood, Sussex, 01243 755048

The Goodwood Group of companies are housed in 12,000 acres of countryside and include the racecourse, historic house and park, hotel and health club, airfield, motor circuit and golf club. Goodwood House is owned and still lived in by the Earl and Countess of March.  One hour guided tours around this substantial English country house show the Stately Apartments, Egyptian State Dining Rooms, Ballroom, Yellow Drawing Room and the significant private art collection.

The Long Man of Willmington, Wilmington, 01273 474610

Mystery continues to surround the picture in the grass at Wilmington.  The outline of a man was discovered in 1710 and it has been suggested that the original drawing was not quite the same as what lies there today.  During the Second World War the figure was painted green to stop the enemy using this as a landmark.
Hastings Castle, Hastings, 01424 444412

Hastings Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1067. The ruins that remain of Hastings Castle are those of the stone fortress, and less than half of the original structure.  The Castle history and battle can be seen on a 16 minute presentation.

Seventeen-century farmhouse, that in the early 20th century became the meeting place for the Bloomsbury Group, a group of pioneering writers, painters and intellectuals.  Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant moved to Charleston in 1916 and over the next half a century put their artistic abilities to work in around the house creating murals, painted furniture, ceramics, paintings and textiles, as well as a painters garden filled with sculptures, mosaics and ponds.

The museum is housed in a Victorian villa that housed German Prisoners of War during the First World War.  Permanent collections and regular temporary exhibitions are held at the museum, with constant collections including toys, film, contemporary craft, local history and paintings. 
Chichester District Museum, Chichester, Sussex, 01243 784683

The museum is housed in an 18th century corn store and discovers the local history of Chichester with displays and hands on activities looking back to the Roman times onwards.  Regular exhibitions are held here, along with children’s activities.

Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, Singleton, Sussex, PO18, 01243 811363

Open-air museum of fifty rebuilt historic buildings dating from the 13th to the 19th century, situated within 50 acres of beautiful Sussex countryside.  The buildings were rescued from destruction, dismantled, and then rebuilt. Exhibits include a timber framed farmhouse, market hall, Victorian school and medieval shop.  Regular demonstrations and people to talk to about how residents of the properties once lived.

Crafts Week Half Term Children's Activities 13th-17th February. Put on your winter woollies and wellies, go to the Museum and warm up with a week of creative activities and countryside skills: outdoor trails, arts, crafts and ideas to inspire accompanied children of all ages. Under cover if wet.

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, Tangmere, Sussex, 01243 790 090

Museum tracing military flights from the beginning to present day, with the emphasis on RAF Tangmere, which was established in 1916 and was one of the key fighter bases during the Second World War.  Historic aircrafts and equipment are on show, as well as flight simulators and a replica of the first Spitfire.

Roman villa discovered in 1811, located on the South Downs.  Extraordinary mosaics on display, including the longest section in the country, at 24 metres, and all under cover.  There are also objects on display found on site during excavations, including roof tiles, floor tiles and glass.

The village of Hartfield was the inspiration for the Winnie the Pooh stories and where all the “Enchanted Places” can be discovered, along with The Pooh shop. This used to be the shop where Christopher Robin’s nanny used to take him on the back of their pet donkey to buy sweets.  It is now home to the world’s largest selection of Winnie-the-Pooh products.  Maps and guides can be picked up in the shop highlighting Pooh places to visit in the forest.

Volk's Electric Railway, Brighton, Sussex, 01273 292718

Volk’s Electric Railway is the world’s oldest operating electric railway, running for just over a mile along the Brighton seafront from Brighton Pier to Black Rock, carrying up to 80 passengers.  The Railway closes during the winter.

1066 Battle of Hastings - Abbey and Battlefield, Battle, East Sussex, TN33, 01424 775705

In October 1066 the English were defeated by the Normans at the Battle of Hastings and now, thanks to an investment of £2.6 million, visitors can discover the story of the battle through a major new exhibition that uses, film, computer technology and interactive exhibits.  Visitors can can enjoy a new audio tour of the 100-acre battlefield and explore the ruins of the Abbey.

Bentley Wildlife & Motor Museum has a bit of everything with a Palladian mansion, gardens, 23 acres of woodlands, wildlife reserve, motor museum, craft workers, tea rooms, miniature steam railway and children's playground.  The landscaped gardens are created into rooms; the wildlife reserve has 125 species of wildfowl; vintage and classic cars on display in the Motor Museum; play area with rope walks and tree platforms.
