Hampton Court Palace was built by Thomas Wolsey between 1515-1521, but was later forced to hand over the palace to Henry VIII, after falling from favour with the King.  Henry VIII went on to overhaul the Tudor sections of the Palace, and later William III added further wings.  Hampton Court Palace is steeped in history, and the gardens hold the world famous Maze.

Courtly Love & Romance, Half Term 11th - 19th February. It is February 1544. While King Henry VIII is away preparing for war with France, Queen Kateryn Parr presides at Hampton Court. In this week of St Valentine’s Day, can she reconcile a quarrelling couple, and bring happiness to a troubled Royal lady? Young visitors new to court will also be able to learn the essential skills needed for would-be courtiers from members of the royal household, with Knight School for the young gentlemen on the East Front and the Art of Dancing in the Great Hall for the young ladies.

Wisley has something to see all year round within its 240 acres. A new glass house has recently been added, the size of ten tennis courts, and positioned beside a new lake within the grounds, allowing visitors to view rare and difficult to grow species in one of three climate zones. The Plant Centre has over 10,000 different plants on sale, and a separate shop that sells a whole range of gifts.

Loseley Park, Compton, nr Guildford, Surrey GU3, 01483 304440

Loseley Park was built in the 1560s for Elizabeth I to stay in, but has been in the More-Molyneaux family for nearly 500 years.  A place of grace and beauty, set in 1,400 acres of Surrey countryside, the house exhibits many fine works of art including paintings, tapestries and paneling.  There are three gardens, one of which has over 1,000 old fashioned roses.

The grounds of Checkley Court are open to the public.  Set in 400 acres of park and woodland, of which 16 acres are landscaped gardens and include terraces, woodland gardens, an Italian Garden, a grotto and stone stairs.  Garden tours are often available and last 25 minutes.
Alice Holt Woodland Park, Bucks Horn Oak, Nr. Farnham, Surrey G10, 01420 23666

Alice Holt Woodland Park is beautiful ancient woodland known for its oak trees and run by the Forestry Commission.  Explore the park by foot or cycle, and at weekends hire a bicycle from the visitor centre. Alice Holt Forest is a great place to experience the fun and freedom of cycling through the trees, with a beginners cycle track, a three mile family cycle trail and guided rides. Cyclists can also use existing paths to explore further into the forest for longer rides. Quench Cycles operates cycle hire from the Alice Holt Forest centre with bikes suitable for both kids and adult bikes, elite bikes, tandems, children's buggies, tag-a-longs and baby seats.

Painshill Park is set in 160 acres and dates back to the 18th century. Activities for both adults and children, with park trails for children and families, and historic sights to see such as The Gothic Temple, Ruined Abbey, Chinese Bridge, Crystal Grotto and Giant Waterwheel.

Storytelling & Craft Workshop 13th-17th February.  Go dressed as your favourite fairytale character for half term fairytale fun. Includes magical storytelling and cutting, sticking, mess-making craft workshop.

Frimley Lodge Park is 24 hectares (59 acres) of unspoilt countryside that has won awards for its design, and recognition as a conservation area of excellence.  The Basingstoke Canal runs along side the park and there is woodland, open space, picnic area with barbeque facilities, a trim trail, children’s playgrounds, a miniature railway, football/rugby/cricket pitches and a Pitch & Putt course. There is a cafeteria in the park serving refreshments, light snacks, drinks, confectionary and ice cream.

The Surrey Hills was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty back in 1958, recognising one of England’s finest landscapes, and some of the best walking in Southern England! The huge area that is the Surrey Hills equates to a quarter of the county of Surrey, and 40% of the area of Surrey Hills is covered by trees. Frensham Heathland is 372 acres of National Trust land with two ponds, the Little Pond and the Great Pond, situated around half way between Farnham and Hindhead. The Common and Great Pond are managed by Waverley Council and the Great Pond is very popular during the summer months when visitors make the most of the sanded “beach” area and the pond, making it a beachy type of environment in the middle of Surrey! There are various short walks to be had around the pond and larger ones taking in both ponds and/or the heathland.  There are also cycle routes across the heathland.
Bushy Park, Hampton Court, Surrey, 020 8979 1586

Bushy Park is the second largest Royal Parks, located opposite the Lions Gate Entrance of Hampton Court Palace. The park is over 1,000 acres in size and his home to over 300 deer that roam freely around the park. As well as having beautiful open parkland in which to walk, there is also a children’s play area, pond and stream.

Basingstoke Canal, Surrey & Hampshire, 01252 370073

The Basingstoke Canal is 32 miles long running from Greywell in Hampshire to Woodham in Surrey, with a footpath stretching all the way along. The canal has 29 locks and connects to the River Wey Navigation. The Canal Visitor Centre is located alongside the Canal in Mytchett, Surrey and offers facilities for visitors including information, picnic area, play area, gift shop, tea room, campsite and free parking. At weekends and during the spring/summer school holidays visitors can jump aboard for public narrowboat trips.
 
The River Thames, Oxon, Bucks, Berks, Surrey,

The River Thames, at 215 miles (346km), is the second largest river in England stretching from its source in Kemble, Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in London. The Thames flows through the counties of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Surrey before reaching London, has 45 locks and has a towpath that runs from the beginning to end! The Thames Path is a designated public footpath and there maybe restrictions for cyclists, as this is not a cycle route. The Thames passes through many historical towns and picturesque villages, and has much to offer both walkers and the boating fraternity with festivals, boat races, rallies and regattas, riverside pubs, restaurants, wildlife and glorious scenery.
